S R Engineering College
Architecture for academic buildings, Warangal, Andhra Pradesh
PROJECT AREA: Master Plan - 8,50,000 Sq.ft. | Completed - 3.0 L sq.ft in Dec '08
Located on the outskirts of Warangal, the SR Engineering College is a sprawling campus developed on 28 acre plot of land. The campus houses 3 lakh sq.ft of built area. Cost constraints had allowed for only a G + 2 built form as opposed to a more spread out low height development. Currently, two academic buildings of 90,000 sq.ft and 70,000 sq.ft respectively have been built.
We have worked with sun and wind orientations to create buildings with courtyards and plazas that provide adequate shade, to channelize the winds and have been proportioned for human comfort encouraging student interaction and outdoor use despite the intense Warangal heat.
Both academic buildings’ have long east-west corridors and open ends to draw the winds in, and the buildings remains cool through the year. To our surprise, the clients have not installed any electrical lights in the classrooms, despite five functional years! The natural north or south light is adequate.
